July 4th: A Day To Be Proud
James Sensenbrenner, June 30, 2005
This 4th of July, as families and friends gather at picnics, parades and fireworks displays across the country, it is important to remember why we celebrate our Independence. Independence Day commemorates the birthday of our nation, July 4th 1776, with the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This Independence Day, let us celebrate our nation, our veterans and current service members and most of all, each other.
In the past 229 years, since the original 13 states adopted the Constitution, our nation has grown tremendously. We have faced unforeseen circumstances and overcome countless obstacles since the days of our first birthdays. We have seen slavery abolished, voting rights gained, desegregation, the great Depression, the civil rights movement, 43 Presidents sworn into office and wars at home and abroad.
More recently, we've grieved as a nation over horrors like the New York City and Pentagon attacks, the Oklahoma City bombing, and disasters caused by flooding, forest fires, and hurricanes. But through it all, the nation has continued to move forward. Even with the setback of the terrible happenings of September 11, 2001, the enduring spirit of the American people is what pushes us forward. Our diverse population always pulls together when needed for our country and its freedoms.
The power of our nation rests in the spirit of our people. We are a nation of farmers, teachers, CEOs, factory workers, nurses, mail-carriers, scientists, law enforcers, small business owners and inventors, to name a few, all trying to leave a mark and make the future brighter for our kids. Above all, we are Americans, free to speak and act as we wish, free to move about and travel, free to own our own homes, lives and futures.
Some of the most inspiring people in this country are the men and women in the Armed Forces. They have been, and continue to be, pushed to their mental and physical limits to keep us safe and provide the freedom that we hold so dear. From the far deserts in Afghanistan to the streets of Baghdad, these folks, America’s best, deserve our utmost gratitude and should know that we will never forget what they have done for us, and continue to do for our country.
As a Congressman from Wisconsin, I feel blessed and honored to represent the citizens of this great nation. Our founding fathers would be proud to see how far we have come. America is truly the "land of the free and the home of the brave," and we should all feel lucky to be a part of it. I invite all to join me this July 4th in remembering those who have made our freedom possible and take the time to celebrate with the ones we love. When you see the American flag waving, stand tall and be proud -- proud of our nation, and each other. God bless America.
Congressman James Sensenbrenner, a Republican, represents the Fifth Congressional District of Wisconsin. He serves as chairman of the House Committee on the Judiciary. The Fifth District of Wisconsin forms an arc surrounding Milwaukee to the North and West, and includes parts of Jefferson, Milwaukee and Waukesha counties, and all of Ozaukee and Washington counties.
