Dr. James Dobson -- The Evangelical Devil
Kevin McCullough, May 5, 2005
The elections of 2004 taught America some very clear lessons. The most obvious perhaps - is just how much the American left hate people of faith - true faith, genuine faith. And the ones they hate most of all are evangelical Christians. And the one they hate most out of that group is heard daily in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and thousands of radio stations elsewhere - Dr. James Dobson.
Thursday's edition of the Denver Post was particularly ripe with quotes from the left as to their true feelings.
"If one thing makes people uncomfortable, it is the manipulation of religious faith for political gain," said Ralph Neas, president of People for the American Way . "What James Dobson has been doing is tantamount to religious McCarthyism."
Religious McCarthyism?
Well you know what that means!
Dr. Dobson doesn't believe that "all roads lead to God, or peace, or love." Dr. Dobson actually might believe in such a thing as absolute truth. Dr. Dobson doesn't seem to have a "go with the flow" mentality. "If it feels good - do it" isn't advice that he gives to people. And as a result when he speaks about what is good for a family or an individual it comes from a place that is genuine and truly based on what is best for them.
Homosexual activists have grown to hate this about Dr. Dobson. So have serial adulterers, pornography producers and distributors, and people in government positions that enjoy all of the above.
Recently the always boiling anger towards Dobson and his organization "Focus on the Family" has even become more intense. Activist protestors have been arrested outside the Colorado Springs headquarters. And on a day when the Dobson’s are perhaps most visible to the nation, "The National Day of Prayer, the venom got served up on the op-ed pages. And when secular groups have been particularly ineffective at getting Dobson to change course, the media has begun to coronate a new group of critics - "the liberal Christian."
"When Dr. Dobson transferred his authority as a facilitator of healthy families to being a prognosticator about partisan politics, he brought along with him many people whose trust had been won in one realm that is now being played upon in another realm," said "Reverend" Welton Gaddy, of the Interfaith Alliance.
First - to the point being made by the "Reverend." It is completely disingenuous for someone like Dobson - who is advocating for the cause of healthy families to not ultimately address the greater societal factors that lead to the breakdown of the family. Adultery, Pornography, Homosexuality are all actions and institutions that have begun to decimate the family structure. Those who have championed these and other immoral behaviors have done so through the use of government. Thereby politics - must become part of the discussion of Dr. Dobson's focus must be. To assert falsely, as the "Rev." Gaddy does that it is a sheer move to acquire political power is to deny that the eventual outcome that Dr. Dobson seeks - is still that of a healthy family.
But to the issue of this new idea of a "liberal Christian"...
Pardon the obvious - but there is no such thing.
When a person who calls himself a Christian, violates the tenants of Christ, violates the spoken authoritative words of Christ, violates the written instructions of Christ, violates the nature and character of Christ, they cease being a "Christian." They are instead - someone who wishes to be called a Christian - but in reality wants to do whatever they jolly well please.
The left has figured out that if someone will call themselves a Christian - but go against every basic fundamental of Christianity - then the media can use that personality as a wedge against the myriads of Christians in the nation. Hence the scorn being heaped upon Dr. Dobson.
It won't end anytime soon. Because of these fundamentally true statements...
"Conservatives believe there is a God!" (Someone beyond them, who created them, who is owed their obedience.)
"Liberals believe they ARE God!" (Do whatever I jolly well please, and no one can say otherwise.)
And to liberals - anyone who takes on the name, characteristics, and behavior of a Christian - especially an evangelical - should expect the worst.
Because to liberals true Christians - like Dr. James Dobson - are really just "evangelical devils."
