El Al To The Rescue Gary Fitleberg, December 30, 2004El Al Israeli Airlines dispatched a special direct flight to Colombo, Sri Lanka last night, to bring home Israelis wishing to leave the disaster-struck nation. "The Sri Lankan government authorized a special El Al landing in the capital of Colombo, even though there are no regular direct flights there from Israel," El Al CEO Amos Shapira said. The extra flight hours required for the trip were approved by representatives of the pilots and the Israel Civil Aviation Authority. El Al also sent a cargo plane with humanitarian aid to Sri Lanka Wednesday. It will return with other injured Israelis. All the flights are being coordinated with the Foreign Ministry, Shapira said.
