Israeli Army Appoints Interfaith Clerics

Gary Fitleberg, December 22, 2004

The Israel Defense Forces will appoint clerics from the Muslim, Druze and Christian faiths to administer religious services to soldiers if the Knesset approves a draft law submitted by Yahad MK Ran Cohen and Likud MKs Majali Wahabi and Ayoub Kara.

The draft passed a preliminary reading in the plenum yesterday.

Cohen said he has been trying to introduce the legislation for four years but it has been opposed until now by the government. He said he had approached acting Justice Minister Tzipi Livni to get the government's approval.
