Israel And EU Sign Trade Pact

Israel and the European Union negotiated a pact aimed primarily at improving trade.

The agreement signed Thursday also acknowledges Europe’s role in the peace process. "Israel clearly acknowledges the role of the E.U. in the "Quartet," said the agreement endorsed Thursday by the European Union.

The Quartet is the diplomatic group of the United Nations, United States, Russia and the European Union, that drives the "Road Map" plan for Arab-Israeli peace.

The European Union signed similar accords with several other countries -- Moldova, Ukraine, Morocco, Tunisia, Jordan and the Palestinian Authority/Palestine Liberation Organization -- that open up access to European markets.
