A San Diego Union-Tribune columnist quit because his publisher spiked a column that sought to explain why Jews preferred John Kerry.

James Goldsborough, who had been at the newspaper for 12 years, said his column -- which sought to explain Jewish support for the Democratic presidential hopeful despite President Bush's pro-Israel policies -- was spiked because Copley newspapers is taking an increasingly right-wing line.

Copley said the column was spiked because it might offend some readers.
