I Dare Call It Treason

Judson Cox, November 29, 2004

Predictably, many on the Left responded to my column, "Bring Back HUAC," by accusing me of stifling dissent. I addressed these concerns in the second paragraph:

Debate, protest and even conscientious objection to war are essential elements of our political system, which is why such activities are protected by our Constitution. Treason is taking up arms against our nation, or giving aid and comfort to our enemies. Sedition is actively encouraging acts of treason. Treasonous and seditious activities are illegal; they are not protected as free speech.

I never expect liberals to debate me on what I actually said. These are the same people who answer any argument concerning the war in Iraq by screaming, "Halliburton," who urged us to vote for John Kerry because Republicans think, "rape should be legal," (Cameron Diaz, 9/29/04) and who oppose the Patriot Act on the basis of John Ashcroft's mythical fear of Cheshire cats. Fortunately for my mental health and the good of our Republic, as Ann Coulter said in How to Talk to a Liberal, "the street performers usually punch themselves out eventually and are taken back to their parents' house."

Lawful protest, dissent and calling the President names, are lawful activities; calling for the President to be assassinated is not! It's pretty simple if you can discern what the meaning of is, is (that is, if you aren't a liberal).

There are limits to free speech. You have no "right" to encourage others to break the law, incite a riot or "yell fire in a crowded theater." Radical Islamic fascists have no right to recruit in our prisons, colleges and mosques. The enviro-nuts who urge people to burn down research facilities have no right to do so. Michael Moore has no right to create propaganda for our nation's enemies. These are crimes.

The Justice Department has been so whipped by ACLU and its fellow travelers, that it lacks the will to prosecute treason and sedition. For this reason, I am encouraging the House Committee on Un-American Activities be reinstituted to investigate and spur prosecution of seditious activities. We must send a clear message to the fifth column within our nation, that their illegal activities will no longer be tolerated. The Left screams that I am attacking their freedom of speech, but all I am asking is that the law be enforced.

The Left refuses to accept any consequences for their actions. They live in a Peter Pan world, believing they may break our laws with impunity. For them, war is merely a game, and an opportunity to relive their rebellious youth. Others do not have the luxury of embracing the delusions of Leftist utopia. Others risk their lives to protect the rights and freedoms of us all.

From the Army Times, 11/20/04:

"Sgt. Rafael Peralta built a reputation as a man who always put his Marines' interests ahead of his own. He showed that again, when he made the ultimate sacrifice of his life Tuesday, by shielding his fellow Marines from a grenade blast.

"...Peralta wasn't even assigned to the assault team that entered the insurgent safe house in northern Fallujah. Despite an assignment that would have allowed him to avoid such dangerous duty, he regularly asked squad leaders if he could join their assault teams.

"One of the first Marines to enter the house, Peralta was wounded in the face by rifle fire from a room near the entry door, said Lance Cpl. Adam Morrison, who was in the house when Peralta was first wounded. Moments later, an insurgent rolled a fragmentation grenade into the area where a wounded Peralta and the other Marines were seeking cover. As Morrison and another Marine scrambled to escape the blast, pounding against a locked door, Peralta grabbed the grenade and cradled it into his body, Morrison said.

"While one Marine was badly wounded by shrapnel from the blast, the Marines said they believe more lives would have been lost if not for Peralta's selfless act. `He saved half my fire team,' said Cpl. Brannon Dyer, 27, of Blairsville, Ga."

How should we honor such sacrifice? Shall we allow our enemy to continue recruiting on our soil? Shall we turn a blind eye as the likes of John Walker Lindh and "Azzam the American" join forces with al Qaeda to kill those who would sacrifice everything to protect us?

If you believe we should honor those who fight the war abroad, by enforcing our laws at home, please sign this petition asking our leaders to prosecute the crimes of treason and sedition, and to bring back the House Committee on Un-American Activities.
