Democrats Still Don’t Get It

Kevin D. Korenthal, November 13, 2004

Even after having their standard bearer, Bill Clinton, chide them for their lack of ability to "speak the language of morality," Democrats are still whining about the "trailer trash" and "corporate lackeys" that went to the polls and voted to re-elect George W. Bush.

The former President's argument wholly misses the point of what happened on November 2nd. Bill Clinton thinks it is the language and not the policies that voters rejected in John Kerry. The truth is that voters came out in record numbers for Bush because President Bush believes and lives the very values his campaign talked about. President Bush spoke during the Republican Convention about promoting a "Culture of Life". This culture, the President believes is the relevant rally for America to answer in this century. After decades of anything goes, sexual obsession and devaluing of innocent human life, President Bush sees the need to redirect America's attitudes away from the Progressive Agenda and on to an agenda that promotes personal responsibility, less sexual content in free media and more respect for life, whether it be for a fetus, an aging person or a person condemned to a long and painful death. America responded to these ideals and therefore saw Bush as the best man to lead this nation.

Of course, the two candidate’s differing views on Iraq and the broader war on terror (Kerry thinks the 2 are mutually exclusive) was also a major factor. Many left-leaning Democrats, and those that have been misled by the major media of print and television, are today reeling from the rebuke the American voter exacted upon them. They will continue to rage and deny what happened this year because they refuse to accept that America does not want the secular society of certain European countries. They fail to make the distinction between the killing of terrorists to bring freedom and Democracy and filling mass graves for a means to hold on to power. Seriously! Just last night I heard a leftist on the TV say that the mass torture and killing of Iraqi's under Saddam Hussein is the same as a few rogue servicemen and women who humiliated a couple dozen terrorists in Abu Graib prison.

The Leftists in this country continue to cast aside any facts that do not agree with their worldview. I predicted before this election that Democrats who are left of center will not recognize their candidate's defeat as a rebuke on what they believe, but rather more stupid people (as opposed to them that are supposedly smarter) making it to the polls on election day.

The only conclusion one can come to is that Democrats are going to get religion. But it won't be real religion. In fact, I am guessing any religion or combination of religion will do. In this case, Islam is as good as Christianity is as good as Judaism is good as Buddhism. When you don't really believe in a higher power, all the deities look the same to you and the details are beyond your caring.

The supreme issue of this election came down to the values we hold dear. Love of God and Country and the traditionally defined morality that comes along with our way of thinking.

A few days before the election, I found myself in front of a small group of 20-somethings that were talking about their plan for the evening, which included taking pills and attending an all night Rave. One of them noticed the Bush/Cheney04 button I was wearing on the back of my ball cap and called it out to the rest of the group. I know what you are thinking. You would think that this group of people would have derided me for my support of Bush. You would be wrong. I myself was amazed to learn that all of these young people not only supported the President, but also saw the irony of the way they live their life versus the ideals they appreciate in a leader. Without explaining how they rationalized their risky lifestyle (including promiscuous sex) against the qualities they appreciated in a president, this group revealed the path Democrats must choose if they are to regain relevance in America. One can make the choice to live any lifestyle they please, but choosing that path does not give one the right to challenge all conventional wisdom to legitimize that lifestyle.

But I am afraid I just teased you. Alas, I hold out little hope that the left wing of the Democratic Party can make this leap. The Democrats have survived by making causes of people they can use to gain and maintain power. The Republican Party, in recent decades, has been about empowering Americans to do for themselves what the Democrats claim more government handouts can do better. The two ways of thinking cannot exist in tandem.
