Steady As She Goes America
Kevin D. Korenthal, June 27, 2004
As bad as things may seem in Iraq right now, we are actually quite fortunate to be where we are. That’s a bold statement, I know, so please let me explain.
Clearly, no one in the CIA or FBI really thought Osama could have pulled something off as big as 9/11. The Jihadists made preparations as America slept. On 9/11, Fundamental Islam indicated that it intended to end Democracy in the world. They declared war on us, not the other way around. And if you separate Saddam’s Regime from the enemy, you are participating in historical revisionism. Today the threats that were originally shrouded in darkness are very apparent. An enemy we can see is an enemy we can defeat.
Despite the effort now underway to eradicate terrorism, it is not defeated yet. And we face an enemy that plays by no rule of conduct other than the only good Infidel (Christian Crusader) or Zionist (Jew) is a dead Infidel or Zionist. So it is expected by just about everyone who honestly studies Geopolitical Conditions that some big attacks are planned for later this year. The Democratic and Republican Conventions are nice juicy targets for the Jihadists, especially the GOP gathering because it is in New York. This may also make it the more difficult choice, considering that New York now leads the nation in Homeland Security monetary allocation.
But the attack could come at any time and in any of a dozen known forms and kill as many as were killed on 9/11. I hope our government can sniff out these threats before they get a chance to hatch their evil plans. We know of at least 2 attacks (slated to kill from dozens to hundreds) that have been foiled in the last several months. But in an open society such as we have, how can you watch all the targets from all the possible angles all the time? The answer is, you can’t. As long as America is a free nation, it will be inherently vulnerable to attack. Thus I believe an attack of 9/11 proportions will happen.
What can we expect in Iraq?
To be sure, Iraq is going to remain a very bloody place for many months to come. But one instigating issue, the political "occupation" by US and Coalition countries comes to an end this week. We do not expect the Jihadists led by known Al Qaida associate, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi will end their attacks after this day but regular Iraqis, perhaps some who even fought against US forces will begin to see that the real enemy to peace in their country is the foreign fighters and Saddam "dead-enders" and not the Coalition forces. This revelation will undoubtedly begin and has already begun to change minds about the future we, the coalition are offering the Iraqi people. The new Iraqi Government enjoys support by nearly 70% of those polled in the last 2 weeks.
Most important to you and I is that America not fail in its current test. The War On Terror, as I have discussed before, is a war that will last at least as long as The Cold War. But we do have an opportunity to win some very significant victories in Iraq and Afghanistan. Our troops win just about every violent confrontation with the Jihadists. If we can outlast the enemy in these 2 counties, we will send the remaining enemy back on the run again. And when terrorists are on the run, they are most vulnerable.
You may disagree with war in general. You may even disagree that the Iraq War has made the US safer. But what you can not deny is that engaging the enemy where the enemy lives is a whole lot better a plan than waiting for them to come to us. On September 11, 2001 the enemy got to choose the time and place of the attack. President Bush has vowed that freedom-loving nations will not allow the enemy that advantage again. The Fundamentalist Muslims that we fight against must devote most all of their resources to the 2 current theatres of war and therefore can spend very little resources to making attacks in Western and European targets. If you cannot see the benefit of that scenario then perhaps you received this message by mistake.
America did not ask for this war. The anti-war crowd will tell you that America brought this upon its self with a myriad of past foreign policy blunders. That may be, in part, true. But that does not remove a shred of the righteousness of our mission: Defeat Radical Islam in the Middle East in order to ensure the security of all free nations. Even those nations that have chosen not to fight and have as in the case of Spain chosen to run from, rather than towards, the fight.
These are trying times in the history of the world. Historians will ponder the events of today for many generations to come. But one thing will not be revised in history: If America and its allies continue to fight the terrorists then the terrorists will be defeated. President Bush is fighting this war. The Democrats would not have chosen to defeat the enemy. Their policy would have most likely been like that of Bill Clinton, nearly nothing.
America needed a strong decisive and ideologically driven leader in the early 1980’s so that we could defeat the menace of Communism. America got Ronald Reagan. America needed just such a leader for this decade, and like it or not, that leader is George W. Bush. If you believe what I am telling you today, then go forward and spread the word. Switching pitchers when you are ahead in the 5th inning is idiotic. So would be electing a new president just as we are presented with some very significant successes in The War On Terror.
Do not expect the allies of terror (namely; Iran, North Korea, Syria and the Jihadists around the world) will give up even 1 inch of ground willingly between now and the November US Elections. Understand that the defeat of George W. Bush in November will be recognized by the enemies of peace as a clear success for their evil cause. By the same token, a decisive win by The President will show the terrorists that America is resolute to putting and end to world terrorism.
