Syria Drafting Reserves In Preparation For Israeli Attack
International Christian Embassy Jerusalem, 2 Apr 2008
According to the London newspaper Quds Al-Arabi on Wednesday, Damascus is getting ready for a massive Israeli attack on Hizbullah and Syria. Syria’s army has been redeploying troops southward and calling up more reserves in anticipation of an Israeli attack.
Syria has also increased its border security and has deployed armored units and elite troops in the Bekaa valley along Lebanon’s border, a key area for Israelis to attack Hizbullah as well as to place troops near Damascus.
Due to the rising concerns of a flare-up in the North, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak has postponed a planned visit to Berlin next week to discuss Iran's nuclear program as well as efforts by Germany to mediate a return of the two IDF reservists - Eldad Regev and Ehud Goldwasser - abducted by Hizbullah in July 2006.
Without being specific, Syria said that remarks made by IDF officials have made Syria prepare for a possible attack by Israel. The Syrian Interior ministry is expected to announce this weekend the findings of its investigation into who carried out the assassination of Hizbullah arch-terrorist Imad Mughniyeh and is likely to point the finger at Israel’s Mossad and possible Arab agents, according to Syrian sources.
According to the London paper, Hizbullah could delay its acts of revenge so Israel will not have "an excuse" to strike.
The paper also reported that Palestinian terrorist regimes were being more cautious after Mughniyeh’s death. According to one official, "If Israel managed to get to Mughniyeh - leaders of Islamic Jihad, Hamas and others will be an easy target."
